Nordic retail giant's Kubernetes & Linkerd-based platform reduced hosting costs by 80%

ELKJØP, the largest electronics retailer in the Nordics, faced significant challenges in managing its growing microservices architecture. Using individual Azure Web Apps had become expensive and difficult to manage, a problem that was exacerbated by an ambitious project to modernize its retail systems. The company needed a robust platform that could provide critical visibility into service health and encrypt all service-to-service communication.

The solution was implemented by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation project, Linkerd. By using the Linkerd service mesh, ELKJØP gained essential observability for troubleshooting and automated mutual TLS for security. This resulted in a 70-80% reduction in hosting costs and successfully supported the rollout of a new point-of-sale system across over 200 microservices, processing billions in annual sales.
