Preview of the China Unicom Case Study

How China Unicom leveraged Kubernetes to boost efficiency and lower IT costs

China Unicom, one of China's top three telecom operators, faced the challenge of low resource utilization across its thousands of servers and lacked a unified cloud platform to host its hundreds of applications. To address this, the company turned to the vendor Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and adopted Kubernetes for container orchestration.

By implementing a Kubernetes-enabled cloud platform from CNCF, China Unicom hosted 50 microservices and standardized all new development on it. This solution resulted in a 20-50% increase in resource utilization, significantly lowering IT costs. Deployment times were drastically reduced from hours to just 5-10 minutes, and a team of only five people was able to maintain multiple systems.
