Zipcar, a car-sharing company and subsidiary of Avis Budget Group, faced the challenge of standardizing operations across its global data centers while minimizing human error and safely delegating ownership to its distributed engineering teams. To achieve this, they turned to the vendor Cloud Foundry, customizing its Application Runtime and BOSH components to fit their highly opinionated approach to deployment and service orchestration.

The solution implemented by Cloud Foundry involved Zipcar customizing specific components, notably replacing the cloud controller with their own and leveraging BOSH, Diego, and Garden. This provided a multi-cloud strategy that enabled them to move entire production environments between clouds effortlessly. The results included running 6,000 containers, 80+ services, and 25+ production environments, which allowed their 100+ developers to safely ship code daily and maintain a nimble, start-up-like innovation pace.
