Springer Nature Reduces Deployment Time From Weeks To Minutes with Cloud Foundry

Springer Nature, the global scientific, scholarly, professional, and educational publisher, needed a flexible way to unify development and deployment after a major merger brought together multiple businesses, systems, and teams. The company’s challenge was to modernize legacy applications, support a growing global developer base, and improve deployment speed without adding staff complexity. Cloud Foundry platform-as-a-service (PaaS) was selected as the foundation for global application deployment.

Using Cloud Foundry, Springer Nature standardized application delivery across teams and cloud environments, enabling microservices, self-service deployment, and consistent operations on infrastructure including OpenStack, VMware, and AWS. The results were dramatic: deployment time dropped from weeks to minutes, uptime improved, and production changes to key channels like SpringerLink are now pushed multiple times a day. Springer Nature also scaled from zero to 1,200 apps in about a year, while supporting over 200 developers across 20 teams.
