Comic Relief Moving Giving Pages to Cloud Foundry Microservices

Comic Relief, the UK charity behind fundraising initiatives like Giving Pages and Sport Relief, needed a better way to support its online payment processing as its monolithic system began to slow development and limit safe changes. The organization turned to Cloud Foundry to help modernize its platform and move toward smaller, more independent apps for its fundraising and events systems.

Using Cloud Foundry, Comic Relief gradually broke components into microservices, adopted Docker for local simulation and Concourse CI for improved visibility, and kept some shared services such as a relational database where it made sense. The result was two reusable APIs for payment processing and identity management, unified authentication across multiple apps, and a single payment interface powering four web products. Cloud Foundry also helped Comic Relief improve continuous integration, contribute enhancements back to Omnipay, and prepare for future high-capacity donation spikes with a more reliable deployment foundation.
