Playlist - Customer Case Study

Playlist, an internet radio streaming company, was running its Ruby on Rails primary application on Heroku. As traffic and backend complexity grew, their hosting costs climbed from hundreds to thousands of dollars per month, and performance suffered badly, with request queues growing and user activity dropping. To address this, Playlist turned to Cloud 66 for managing a migration to AWS EC2.

Cloud 66 helped Playlist spin up and manage the Rails app on AWS quickly, with support for environment configuration, database handoff to Amazon RDS, and deployment automation through the Cloud 66 toolbelt and redeploy hooks. After switching from 24 Heroku 2X dynos to just 3–4 AWS servers, Playlist saw much lower response times, about a 15% increase in song plays per day, and monthly infrastructure costs reduced to less than 10% of their Heroku bill.
