A Clio Case Study
Root & Rebound is an Oakland-based nonprofit founded in 2014 that provides pro bono reentry services and criminal justice reform advocacy. With a six-person staff, a reentry hotline that accepts collect calls, online training and guides, the organization confronts a massive need—roughly 50,000 people are released from California prisons each year and face some 48,000 legal barriers—while managing high volumes of mail and calls and relying on short-term volunteers.
To scale its work and maintain continuity, Root & Rebound has used Clio since 2014 to log about 1,700 open matters, track roughly 500 letters a week and 100 Friday calls, and capture detailed notes, custom fields, and related contacts for complex cases. That system lets volunteers hand off work cleanly, ensures timely follow-up, and generates the data the nonprofit needs for grant writing and impact reporting—helping the organization serve far more people than its original one-on-one model allowed.
