Mount Sinai Retrospective Trial in Patient Group with Rare Kidney Disease

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai needed a faster way to find eligible patients for a retrospective clinical trial involving a rare kidney disease, where manual chart review and ICD-code screening had yielded very few candidates over months of effort. Clinithink’s CLiX ENRICH for Clinical Trials was used to search unstructured clinical notes and documents for patients matching the study’s inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Clinithink worked with Mount Sinai to build and run tailored NLP queries against 9,200 documents from 513 patients, producing a prioritized list of 107 potentially eligible patients. In just two weeks of focused work, the project identified 8 eligible patients and projected 5 enrollments, compared with 3 eligible and 2 enrolled in the original manual process—an improvement of 2.5x more candidates in about 5% of the time, with a substantial reduction in effort.
