Case Study: Deutsche Bank achieves secure, row-level BI and fast analytics with ClickHouse

A ClickHouse Case Study

Preview of the Deutsche Bank Case Study

How we built BI on Clickhouse with row-level security in Deutsche Bank Technology Centre

Deutsche Bank Technology Centre faced the challenge of delivering interactive BI across many natural data silos and user types while enforcing bank-wide, record-level access rules and supporting full SQL for tools like Tableau, RShiny and direct SQL clients. To meet those requirements they built a data warehouse on ClickHouse, aiming for low-latency, denormalized reporting plus consistent row-level security across all UIs.

The implemented solution uses ClickHouse as the central DWH with a proxy layer (ABACUS) that applies attribute-based access control (ABAC) by transforming incoming SQL ASTs to inject policy filters at query time. ClickHouse now supports 72 data sources and >100 ETL jobs in a 4-box environment (~26 TB) with interactive performance (~2 Rps), enabling secure, audited interactive reports, research and planning while reusing existing bank access rules.
