DeepL, the language translation company, needed a privacy-friendly way to build analytics capabilities across its websites, apps, and internal metrics. In 2020, it evaluated several self-hosted options and chose ClickHouse as its central data warehouse because it was fast to deploy and suited to DeepL’s data volume and complex event tracking needs.
ClickHouse helped DeepL launch a working MVP in just a couple of weeks, starting with browser events, Kafka, and Metabase, and later expanding into a highly automated analytics platform. DeepL then grew the setup to a 3-shard, 3-replica cluster ingesting about half a billion raw rows per day, and used ClickHouse to power experimentation and ML personalization, enabling rapid product iteration and strong performance at scale.
