10x speed, 10x savings Constant Contact’s journey from Pinot to ClickHouse

Constant Contact, a long-time digital marketing platform for SMBs, needed a better way to support real-time event processing and interactive analytics as its Automated Path Builder and SMS offerings grew. Its existing Apache Pinot-based stack became increasingly difficult to maintain and scale as data volumes rose, especially with upserts and large segment growth.

Constant Contact migrated to ClickHouse using the Altinity ClickHouse operator, AWS Athena CTAS exports to S3, and ClickHouse’s bulk loading and ReplacingMergeTree features. The move cut historical data load time from two or three weeks to about three hours, delivered sub-second query response times on a single node, compacted 180 GB of Pinot segments into a 35 GB ClickHouse part, and reduced infrastructure costs by nearly 10x while improving performance by about 10x.
