The Town of Maynard, MA needed a better way to communicate budget information to town officials and residents. Working mostly in spreadsheets, staff found the finished budget presentation bland and difficult for the public to understand, even though transparency was a top priority for the Board of Selectmen. The town wanted a clearer way to show how spending affected everyday community needs.

To address this, the Town of Maynard used a Massachusetts Community Compact IT Grant to purchase a subscription to ClearGov’s Open Budget platform. ClearGov provided an infographic-style Transparency Center and dynamic financial dashboard that made the town’s finances easier to understand and share. The result was improved budget transparency, stronger engagement from residents and stakeholders, and a tool officials could use to compare spending with similar communities.
