Spotify, the world's most popular audio streaming service, manages a massive and constantly evolving codebase across thousands of repositories. The company faced a significant challenge: automating complex, large-scale code migrations that required understanding code semantics, which were too difficult for traditional deterministic scripting tools to handle.

To solve this, Spotify implemented a background coding agent using the Claude Agent SDK from Anthropic. This solution allowed engineers to describe transformations in natural language, which Claude Code then executed autonomously across the codebase. The results were substantial, with the agent generating and merging over 650 pull requests per month into production and saving up to 90% of the engineering time previously spent on manual migration work.
