Los Angeles Unified School District deploys 200+ air sensors with Clarity Movement

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LA Unified) faced the challenge of protecting over 500,000 students and staff from severe and hyperlocal air pollution, including ozone and particulate matter from traffic and worsening wildfires. The district's Office of Environmental Health and Safety, led by Carlos Torres, lacked real-time, localized data and relied on inefficient methods to assess air quality, making timely health-protective decisions impossible. They partnered with vendor Clarity Movement to address this.

Clarity Movement's solution was the deployment of the Know Your Air network, consisting of over 200 of their Node-S air pollution sensors strategically placed across the 710+ square-mile district. This provided real-time, hyperlocal PM2.5 data to administrators and the public via a dashboard. The results ensured every school was within 1.6 miles of a sensor, enabling immediate actions to mitigate exposure during pollution events and providing data for student curricula. The project established the nation's largest school-based air quality sensor network, directly impacting the health of over 500,000 students.
