A Clarity Movement Case Study
Hillsborough County, Florida, faced the challenge of monitoring traffic-related air pollution in neighborhoods that were not covered by its sparse and expensive regulatory-grade air monitors. Community concerns about disproportionate exposure to air pollution, especially near interstate highways, prompted a need for a more extensive and hyperlocal monitoring solution. This led to a collaborative project with vendor Clarity Movement.
The county implemented a network of over 20 Clarity Node-S air quality sensors and a Black Carbon Module to collect real-time, hyperlocal data on pollutants like PM2.5, NO2, and black carbon. The solution from Clarity was chosen for its affordability, solar-powered and cellular-enabled operation, and strong technical support. The project successfully increased community engagement through workshops and data sharing, provided key insights for local planning, and was recognized with an award from the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association for its grassroots impact.
