A Claris Case Study
Team Heart is a nonprofit that flies cardiac surgical teams to Rwanda to restore heart health where local capacity is limited; each mission performs about 16 surgeries but requires meticulous tracking of roughly 2,000 individual pieces of equipment per trip. Before 2013 they relied on error-prone spreadsheets and once even missed a case of pacemakers, forcing delays and risking the success of costly, high-stakes missions.
To solve this, volunteers migrated to a custom FileMaker app on iPads that tracks inventory, serial numbers and expiration dates, manages orders, and stores photos and descriptions for training local clinicians. The app has reduced errors, given organizers peace of mind, improved trip planning and training, protected donations and surgical resources, and is now being extended to support post-op patient follow-up and long-term program growth.
