Saving lives in Papua New Guinea with help from custom apps created using FileMaker

Youth With a Mission (YWAM) operates a medical ship and a fleet of small boats delivering care to remote communities in Papua New Guinea, where high disease burdens, many languages, and scattered islands complicate care. The volunteer teams were hampered by paper intake forms, clipboards, sticky-note inventory tracking, and time-consuming manual reporting, which created inefficiencies and risked patient safety.

Gearbox Solutions’ Marty Thomasson used the FileMaker Platform to build iPad/iPhone and server-based apps: photo-enabled patient intake and history, lab-image capture, barcode-driven inventory/expiration tracking, and automated synchronization to home offices. The result: faster, more accurate triage and treatment, fewer errors, streamlined government reporting, hours saved per team, and more time devoted to patient care in these hard-to-reach areas.
