Understanding Nantucket’s variable population with data

Nantucket, through the Nantucket Data Platform, needed a more accurate understanding of its year-round and seasonal population so the island could plan for the right services. Civis Analytics helped by combining its proprietary data with local Nantucket census and property assessor records in the Civis Platform to create a clearer picture of the island’s demographics.

Civis Analytics cleaned, standardized, geocoded, unified, and enriched the data to produce a single source of truth, while also enabling additional data like weather and economic activity to be added and shared through built-in reporting tools. The result was an estimated 17,893 adult residents, with 74% likely permanent and 26% part-time residents, giving Nantucket a more precise basis for strategic planning and service decisions.
