Managing Magazine Subscriptions Using CiviMember

The Monthly Magazine, a Melbourne-based publication, needed to replace its existing subscription management system with a solution that integrated with its Drupal website. They chose CiviCRM and repurposed CiviMember to handle subscriptions; key challenges included adapting a system that did not track physical magazine issues and implementing gift subscriptions, which required sponsoring back-office functionality into CiviCRM Core and adding a custom front-end module.

CiviCRM’s CiviMember was implemented and extended (with work by John Derry and the Fuzion team) to provide integrated subscription workflows inside the Drupal site, a custom module to handle gift subscriptions, and back-office support added to Core. The result was a consolidated, lower‑cost subscription platform with built-in mail, reporting and membership features, improved handling of physical-issue tracking and gifts, and a streamlined way for The Monthly Magazine to manage subscriptions and generate revenue — all leveraging CiviCRM.
