A CiviCRM Case Study
Step is the St Albans and Harpenden Christian Education Project, a small charity that delivers lessons, assemblies, mentoring and social action in secondary schools. As the organisation grew, staff and volunteers struggled with disconnected spreadsheets, unlinked donor and contact lists, lost institutional knowledge and multiple users needing shared remote access. To solve this, Step adopted the CiviCRM platform as a central, multi‑user database to replace ad hoc files and lists.
CiviCRM (implemented for Step by Squiffle Consulting) consolidated contacts, harvested data from phones, emails and hard copies, and added event management, donation recording and segmented communications. The result is a single accessible system used for weekly newsletters, termly mailings and annual fundraising, streamlined administration and better collaborative working — Step now manages its data and supporter marketing from CiviCRM and has eliminated the previous spreadsheet chaos.
