An Easier Interface for tracking Volunteers

The Literacy Council of Frederick County, which trains volunteer tutors to provide free reading and conversation instruction, faced a clunky, out‑of‑date and expensive proprietary volunteer-tracking system and needed remote access for staff and volunteers. They selected CiviCRM, using its Case Management, Activity Reporting and Event Management capabilities to meet their need for flexible, web‑accessible volunteer and tutor management.

CiviCRM was implemented with minor customizations—modifying two core reports (Activities and Groups)—which let the Literacy Council of Frederick County retire their old system, save hundreds of dollars annually in software maintenance, and give staff the ability to work from anywhere. The new CiviCRM setup streamlined tutor management, tracked volunteers through training, and added grouping and geographic reporting to better match tutors with students, leading to faster adoption and more effective volunteer placements.
