Work Order API Facilitates SCADA Integration at Waterford Township, MI

Waterford Township’s Department of Public Works (DPW) faced a wave of retirements and needed to capture institutional knowledge while better using operational data to standardize workflows. To address this, Waterford Township integrated its SCADA system with Cityworks using the Cityworks Work Order API to generate electronic standard operating procedures (eSOPs) and trigger condition‑based work orders.

The solution linked GE Proficy iFix SCADA through GE Proficy Workflow to the Cityworks Work Order API (JSON web services), enabling automated creation of routine and emergency work orders and eSOPs when SCADA conditions are detected. Because developers could call Cityworks’ web services directly, the integration was completed in a single week (and the full design, development, and implementation in two weeks), reduced development effort and cost, made the connection easier to maintain during upgrades, and empowered DPW staff to build new workflows without a developer—demonstrating measurable time savings and operational efficiency for Cityworks users.
