Urban Forestry Administration - Customer Case Study

The Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) in Washington, D.C., faced inefficient, error-prone tree inventory and maintenance workflows after years of PDA-based field collection that required manual uploads and merging. To monitor street trees in real time and better detect illegal removals and storm damage, UFA adopted ArcGIS Online and the Collector for ArcGIS mobile app and continued to use Cityworks to access shared maps and select the right data-capture methods for its crews.

Cityworks enabled UFA staff to consume the same geospatial services across applications so arborists could update tree assets in the field and have changes automatically merge into a common map, improving response times and reducing data errors. Combined with lidar visualization and ArcGIS tools, the solution uncovered roughly $100,000 in unissued fines (settled for $50,000), funded new trees, and modernized UFA’s workflows—saving time and money.
