Springfield, IL Approaches Snow Control Using Cityworks

The City of Springfield, Illinois, which serves about 118,000 residents, faced an annual average of 22 inches of snow and the challenge of efficiently managing snow removal across 625 miles of roadway. Much of the process was manual and paper-based, causing communication delays between shifts and crews. To modernize operations and improve tracking, the city turned to Cityworks, a GIS-centric asset management application, and integrated it with the Esri ArcGIS platform.

Using Cityworks, Springfield implemented observation-based inspections for snow routes that generate condition scores and feed thematic maps in ArcGIS Online. GISinc helped structure the Cityworks–GIS data so the city’s Snow Tracker web app can display real-time inspection results, analytics (including wheel charts), and instantly update decision-makers. The Cityworks-driven solution has made snow event management far more fluid, improved communications and customer service, and will provide near-real-time public route information via the city website and social channels.
