Pex Powers Ultra-Fast, Accurate Content Search With Citus and Google Cloud

Pex helps studios, labels, and creators find, track, and monetize video and audio content wherever it appears on the web, but doing so requires real-time analytics across massive volumes of data. After outgrowing MongoDB, Cassandra, single‑node Postgres and HBase, Pex needed an OLTP solution that could deliver both horizontal scale and low latency to fingerprint, index and update billions of records daily.

Pex deployed Citus on Google Cloud to scale Postgres horizontally, building a 20‑node cluster (about 1,280 cores) that manages a 50 TB database and ingests roughly 80 billion row updates per day (9.4 billion videos refreshed at least once every 24 hours), writing ~60,000 rows/sec. The result is a consistent, worry‑free source of truth that delivers cross‑platform analytics in minutes, enables rapid growth, and—Pex’s CEO says—made the business possible.
