A Citrix Case Study
Ingersoll Rand/Trane, a $13 billion multinational manufacturer with about 57,000 employees, needed to accelerate post-merger integration and mobilize a widely distributed workforce. Facing a potential week of downtime to ship server hardware for datacenter consolidation and needing to expand hiring for call centers, the company looked for a faster, lower-cost way to centralize servers and deliver desktops and applications remotely.
Using Citrix virtualization (XenServer, XenDesktop, XenApp) Ingersoll Rand virtualized hundreds of servers and desktops, purchased 16 host servers instead of leased hardware, and cut over the datacenter remotely. The platform scaled capacity to the equivalent of 350 servers and delivered on-demand apps to more than 9,000 users. Results included about $1M in hardware savings, over $100K saved in year one with an expected $500K per year ongoing, provisioning time cut from two weeks to one day, and application delivery reduced from two weeks to ~20 minutes, enabling a truly mobile workforce.
