Virtual computing improves quality of education, enhances teacher productivity

Grupo Bom Jesus is a network of Catholic schools and universities in southern Brazil that set out to deliver consistent, high-quality education to both rural and urban students. Many newly merged schools were financially strained with little or no IT resources, so the group faced the challenge of scaling quickly while providing predictable, equitable learning services and improving teacher productivity.

The organization implemented a centralized virtual computing model—delivering applications, infrastructure and virtual classrooms on any device and using VoIP, videoconferencing and collaboration tools—to standardize IT-as-a-service. The approach supported rapid growth (from 2 to more than 52 institutions), cut travel expenses by 40%, bandwidth use by 50% and telecom costs by 60%, and enabled plans to offer cloud services to neighboring schools while boosting faculty and staff productivity.
