U.S.-based Teaching Hospital Expands Access to Medical Education and Services in Tough Economic Times

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a U.S.-based teaching hospital and research center serving patients statewide. Faced with steep state funding cuts, MUSC had to choose between cutting services or transforming how it delivered care and education to maintain its mission.

MUSC virtualized its IT infrastructure with Citrix, giving clinicians secure, anywhere access to full desktops, patient records and medical images and delivering more than 300 virtualized applications to urban and rural providers. The move shrank the IT footprint and capital costs, cut power consumption by 73%, achieved 99.9% uptime, and enabled service expansion so more patients—including historically underserved communities—benefit from timely, high-quality care.
