University of Texas Medical Branch improves health of bottom line with Citrix

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston is a large healthcare and academic complex that needed to control IT costs while reliably delivering mission‑critical applications like the EPIC EMR. IT sought to simplify patching and help‑desk support, extend device lifecycles, and ensure business continuity during disruptions such as Hurricane Ike.

UTMB deployed Citrix XenApp, XenDesktop (with Provisioning Services and HDX), Access Gateway VPNs and Wyse thin clients to centralize application and desktop delivery. The solution cut hardware and support costs, reduced help‑desk calls, shrank virtual desktop storage, enabled fast disaster recovery and remote access, and delivered a high‑quality user experience—driving widespread adoption of thin clients and virtual desktops across the organization.
