Scottish Environment Protection Agency divorces the desktop for a mobile workstyle

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Scotland’s environmental watchdog with 1,200 staff across 25 sites, needed to reduce carbon and IT costs while giving employees greater flexibility. Managing hundreds of individual PCs and costly specialist workstations for scientists made IT support inefficient, increased travel, and limited mobile working.

SEPA deployed a Citrix virtual desktop solution (XenDesktop, NetScaler, Receiver and CloudBridge) with partner I‑KONIC and moved to thin clients and hot‑desking so staff can access their desktop from any device or location. The new model cut desktop energy use by 90%, reduced travel and support overheads, improved utilization of expensive compute resources for scientists, and is being rolled out across the organisation.
