A Citrix Case Study
Shelton Public Schools, a diverse K–12 district in western Connecticut, sought to level the playing field for students of varied socioeconomic backgrounds while moving to a mix of web‑based and Windows applications. The district needed a cost‑effective way to provide access to Google Apps for Education and familiar Windows tools (like Microsoft Office) without buying expensive laptops for every student, and to support differentiated learning and remote access for both students and teachers.
Working with Gotham Technology Group, Shelton deployed 600 Google Chromebooks, Chromeboxes and 443 Citrix XenApp licenses (with NetScaler ADC), enabling Chromebooks and other devices to access Windows desktops and apps on demand. The hybrid solution delivered seamless toggling between Google and Windows tools, expanded remote access for students and faculty, supported classroom differentiation, and produced major savings—about $1.25M in technology costs over 10 years, roughly $120K a year ongoing, plus avoided laptop and substitute costs—while equalizing application access across the district.
