Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center deploys streamlined EMR system to thousands of workstations

Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, a 617‑bed acute care facility in Hartford with a long history of clinical innovation, needed to replace 34 legacy applications with a single EpicCare EMR and deliver it reliably to more than 3,000 workstations while addressing growing mobile device use and BYOD security risks.

Building on an existing Citrix environment, the hospital deployed EpicCare using Citrix XenApp, XenDesktop and NetScaler and adopted XenMobile (Zenprise) for enterprise mobility. After 18 months and a technical dress rehearsal, the $120M upgrade consolidated 1.3 million patient records into one system, enabling an on‑time launch, real‑time information exchange, fewer transcription errors, seamless clinician access on any device and remote wipe capabilities for lost or stolen devices.
