A Citrix Case Study
Paddy Power, an international betting and gaming group with a strong online presence and rapid growth, faced extreme traffic spikes—concurrent users jumped from about 700 to 76,000 in under 30 seconds during events like the Grand National. Its existing infrastructure was unsustainable in terms of technology, management time and cost, and even small delays in bet placement risked losing customers to competitors, so the company needed a new approach to “scale the unscalable.”
By redeploying Citrix NetScaler at the application level and using features such as automated server rotation, dynamic routing (splitting read/write traffic), application sharding, Surge Protection and SureConnect, Paddy Power automated maintenance and reduced database load. The result was faster, less labor‑intensive server maintenance, markedly improved reliability and availability (the site remained up during major events), and a platform that supports further automation and expanded NetScaler deployment toward near five‑nines uptime.
