Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a world-class research facility with thousands of scientists and a mission spanning clean energy, security, and advanced discovery. To attract and support visiting researchers and internal teams across a 10,000‑acre campus, ORNL needed a flexible, secure mobile infrastructure that supported BYOD and strict security and compliance requirements while ensuring continuity of research during disruptions.

ORNL deployed Citrix solutions — including XenMobile, XenApp, XenDesktop, and NetScaler — to deliver secure remote access, virtual desktops, and scalable authentication and load balancing. The infrastructure let hundreds of external researchers access lab systems, dynamically provisioned 500 extra desktops during a major snowstorm (with remote access usage rising 3–4x), reduced hardware costs for interns, and kept research productive and compliant in any condition.
