Marine vessel manufacturer modernizes design process with Citrix XenApp

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), one of the world’s largest shipbuilders with 2,000 in‑house designers and 1,800 external partners, faced a capacity and performance problem after upgrading its AVEVA Marine CAD from 2D to graphics‑intensive 3D. Their legacy platform could only support about 15 simultaneous 3D users per server—about half the number required—and DSME needed a solution that preserved a fast, natural desktop experience while keeping sensitive design data secure.

DSME deployed Citrix XenApp for GPU‑sharing and XenServer virtualization, paired with NVIDIA GRID K2‑equipped HP ProLiant servers, to intelligently allocate CPU/GPU resources. The new system doubled per‑server capacity to 30 concurrent 3D designers, centralizes and secures all project data (even with external partners), and will scale to 1,000+ users—delivering better performance, collaboration, and an estimated $900,000 in annual savings.
