Karolinska blood buses save lives with Citrix

Karolinska University Hospital runs five mobile blood‑donation buses across Stockholm to meet high demand—blood has a short shelf life and the hospital handles over a million patient visits yearly. Until recently, bus staff did all administration manually, which caused delays, risked errors and was hampered by limited mobile connectivity at the buses’ 160 stops.

The hospital virtualized its laboratory and patient‑record systems with Citrix XenApp, equipping buses with 4G, laptops, tablets and barcode printers so staff can securely access and update records on the road. As a result the buses are online continually, process about 80 donors a day, collected 38,000 donations and signed up more than 10,000 new donors last year, with instant traceability and no administrative delays—helping the hospital collect more blood and save more lives.
