Italian university virtualizes workstations and applications with Citrix solutions

Politecnico di Milano, a technology-focused university with over 41,000 students, faced growing demand for IT workstations while its 1,000 midrange and 400 graphics desktops were nearing obsolescence. The school needed a cost-effective, scalable way to upgrade equipment and give students, faculty and staff reliable remote access to critical applications.

The university deployed Citrix XenDesktop to virtualize workstations and support user-owned devices, and added Citrix NetScaler to optimize application delivery and handle peak loads. The solution reduced hardware requirements, enabled anywhere/any-device access for up to 1,000 concurrent users, improved productivity and collaboration, freed budget to upgrade advanced graphics workstations, and positioned the university to expand virtual desktops to 2,000.
