Metaenergia, a young Italian utilities group with about 150 staff across Milan and Rome plus travelling consultants and agents, needed greater operating flexibility to open new offices and support remote work. Existing VPN solutions were too limiting, and the company faced growing shadow IT risks among a predominantly millennial workforce as well as the need to meet incoming GDPR data‑protection requirements.

Metaenergia deployed Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop virtualization to centralize application delivery and optimize bandwidth, enabling secure remote access to apps and data hosted in its own data center. The solution eliminated shadow IT by centralizing app release and management, supported internal users and external call‑center operators without data leaving company servers, improved performance, and reduced TCO through lower helpdesk and workstation costs.
