North York General Hospital, a Toronto academic centre with more than 800 physicians serving roughly 30,000 inpatients and 107,000 ER visitors annually, needed to enable clinicians to work anytime from any device while meeting strict privacy and compliance requirements for patient data. The hospital’s challenge was to provide secure, consistent access to its Cerner EHR across desktops and mobile devices without compromising security or clinician workflow.

Using Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop with NetScaler to deliver Cerner remotely, North York created a controlled, mobile-ready environment that lets clinicians access up-to-date records from hospital, office, or home. The solution improved efficiency and patient safety—part of the award-winning eCare program—helped prevent nearly 8,000 unintentional adverse drug events and 11,000 potential medication errors, sped software upgrades from three days for 300 PCs to five–six hours for 1,500, and reduced IT overhead while supporting secure personal-device access.
