Healthcare leader virtualizes desktops for electronic medical records system with Citrix XenDesktop

Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, a Houston multispecialty system with 22 clinics, two administrative buildings and more than 385 physicians serving nearly 500,000 patients, faced a major IT challenge when it moved to an electronic medical records (EMR) system. The rollout required 1,600 new desktops across exam rooms and clinics running mixed legacy software, forcing IT to perform lengthy, overnight software pushes; a recent hurricane also exposed gaps in the clinic’s business continuity and desktop availability.

Kelsey-Seybold implemented a Citrix VDI solution—Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, NetScaler App Delivery Controller and Provisioning Services—using thin clients and streamed single-image management. The deployment made upgrades immediate instead of days, enabled flexible relocation and telework for continuity, and cut per-device power use from about 74.45 kWh to no more than 8 kWh (with savings amplified across up to 6,000 endpoints). The result is faster patching and scaling, reduced costs, and a more resilient platform for delivering patient care.
