Healthcare leader cuts costs by delivering IT as a service with Citrix XenApp

Hamilton Health Sciences is a network of seven hospitals, a cancer center and an urgent care facility serving about 2.3 million people in and around Hamilton, Ontario, with roughly 11,000 staff. Facing continual provincial budget pressure—including a 2% cut to its IT operating budget—the organization struggled to replace aging hardware while delivering hundreds of applications to thousands of clinicians across multiple campuses and adapting to a rapid rise in personal mobile devices.

Using Citrix XenApp, XenDesktop, XenServer and NetScaler, Hamilton transformed its IT department into Health Information Technology Services (HITS) and created the ClinicalConnect portal to deliver virtualized desktops and applications as a service. The shift reduced capital expenditures, extended the life of older machines, connected 50 hospitals and 4,000 providers, broke down regional information silos, improved clinician mobility and patient care turnaround, and enabled wider, more cost-effective EMR adoption across the province.
