A Citrix Case Study
The UK Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), with 2,600 staff across 20 sites, faced a growing mismatch between traditional PC-based desktops and increasingly mobile working patterns. Employees who moved between desks or worked occasionally from home experienced slow, clumsy profile roaming, while occasional remote workers lacked a cost-effective, secure way to access departmental resources. Any new approach also had to meet Public Services Network security requirements and deliver savings.
DCLG deployed a Citrix-based virtual desktop environment—XenApp with Fujitsu thin clients in offices, NetScaler Gateway and Citrix Receiver for secure remote access, plus XenMobile and Worx apps for offline and BYOD use—with two-factor key fobs for authentication. The result: a 50-point jump in user satisfaction, over 80% saying technology enables flexible work, about 40% savings on desktop and infrastructure costs (from £7m to £4m annually), greater office agility with a 70% desk-to-staff ratio, and faster, cheaper user provisioning.
