Orange County Community Resources, which manages OC Public Libraries’ 33 branches, faced rising capital and administrative costs from an 850‑PC public‑access fleet (plus staff machines) that required frequent reimaging and risked exposing patrons’ personal data. The IT team struggled with lost productivity, image management headaches and the impending cost of a full PC refresh.

They virtualized desktops and apps using Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp with NetScaler and a FlexPod infrastructure, repurposing existing PCs as thin clients and standardizing on three system images. The change eliminated routine reimaging, launched fresh sessions that protect user data, and avoided a planned $1.2M PC refresh—saving $660,000 in new PCs and an additional $125,000 by sharing FlexPod capacity (about $785,000 total)—while simplifying administration and enabling mobile and secure file access.
