Case Study: Bolton NHS Foundation Trust achieves faster diagnoses and clinician mobility with Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop

Bolton NHS improves patient care through clinician mobility

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, an integrated care organisation centered on Royal Bolton Hospital and serving about 30 locations, faced delays in critical diagnoses because clinicians work around the clock from hospital, community clinics, and patients’ homes but couldn’t access hospital resources remotely. With an aging desktop estate, the trust’s CTO sought a single, consistent user experience wherever staff worked.

The trust deployed Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop with IGEL thin clients, Imprivata single sign‑on (RFID badge login), Unidesk and AppSense for app and profile management. The change cut logon times to 2–3 seconds, let clinicians resume the same session anywhere (including viewing high‑definition diagnostic images from home), reduced security risks from open sessions, and simplified IT management while lowering hardware and energy costs.
