Case Study: Cerner cuts device costs and boosts user experience with Citrix XenDesktop

A Citrix Case Study

Preview of the Cerner Case Study

At Cerner, consumerization of IT with XenDesktop is just what the doctor ordered

Cerner Corporation, a global health care IT provider, faced rising demand for BYOD and new device types after the introduction of tablets and smartphones, along with developers’ preference for Apple platforms. The company also needed faster onboarding for acquired staff and Cerner ITWorks clients, better WAN performance for several hundred associates in India, and a scalable way to test its Millennium solution across multiple Windows versions.

Cerner upgraded to Citrix XenDesktop (Platinum) with NetScaler and XenApp, delivering 1,000 virtual desktops (standard and power-user images) and using Workflow Studio and provisioning services to automate three-hour code refreshes with zero downtime. The result: noticeably faster response times in India, much quicker onboarding, about $200,000 saved in hardware costs last year versus issuing laptops, nearly $400,000 saved on testing, and the potential to cut device costs by up to 50%.
