A Citrine Informatics Case Study
Kcarbon, the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency, wanted to develop a new additive recipe for carbon fiber manufacturing and compare machine learning-guided R&D to traditional methods. They partnered with vendor Citrine Informatics to tackle this challenge, beginning the project with no prior experimental data. The goal was to create a formulation that met five key performance criteria.
Citrine Informatics implemented its AI platform to build a model from an initial set of 20 experiments. The solution incorporated Kcarbon's domain knowledge to improve the model, which then suggested new formulation candidates. The results showed that the AI-suggested formulations were 4 times more likely to meet all key criteria than those from traditional R&D. This allowed Citrine and Kcarbon to quickly gain critical insights, determining that their current ingredients could not meet all targets simultaneously and efficiently guiding future research directions.
