A Citrine Informatics Case Study
HRL Laboratories, a research lab jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors, faced the challenge of developing a high-strength, 3D-printable aluminum alloy for aerospace applications that was resistant to cracking. They partnered with Citrine Informatics and used the Citrine Platform to help find a solution to this materials science problem.
Citrine Informatics applied its materials informatics approach, combining AI and scientific knowledge to rapidly search through 11.5 million material combinations. This helped HRL focus its experimental efforts, reducing lab work from years to days. The solution resulted in the development of AL 7A77, the first high-strength aluminum alloy powder for additive manufacturing registered by the Aluminum Association. This gave HRL a first-mover advantage and its first commercial customer was NASA.
