Telus World of Science – Edmonton - Customer Case Study

TELUS World of Science – Edmonton, a science and technology center serving over half a million visitors a year, faced a fragile, “black box” network managed by just two IT staff. The building had 32 unmanaged consumer switches and random wall jacks, making troubleshooting slow and resource-intensive. Introduced by their partner, the organization chose Cisco Meraki for its ease of use, visibility, and price; the team deployed nine Meraki switches and the Meraki cloud dashboard across the facility in about two days.

Cisco Meraki’s cloud dashboard, Layer 7 traffic analytics and traffic‑shaping, and built‑in security transformed operations: troubleshooting that once took hours or days can now be resolved in about ten minutes, nightly summary reports surface anomalies, and automatic threat classification (including DoS) improves security posture. Meraki’s bandwidth controls enabled sensible prioritization for regular 750 GB IMAX downloads and supported secure, high‑throughput connectivity for external tenants—helping generate new revenue (for example, the Alberta provincial government rented the IMAX for a live announcement).
