A Cisco Meraki Case Study
Saxon Energy Services, an international oilfield and drilling services company based in Houston with 3,800 employees and a fleet of 98 rigs across 13 countries, faced the challenge of securely connecting remote rigs with no on-site IT and a lean global IT team of about 20 people. Using Cisco Meraki MX security appliances (notably the MX80) and Meraki’s cloud-managed platform, Saxon needed reliable satellite-linked connectivity, better bandwidth control to stop costly overage charges, and remote management and troubleshooting capabilities.
Cisco Meraki deployed MX80 appliances behind satellite modems, enabled site-to-site VPN, WAN optimization, and built-in bandwidth management/traffic shaping via the Meraki cloud dashboard. The result: overage charges disappeared overnight, Internet performance and workflow speeds improved, work traffic is prioritized, and a 20-person IT staff can centrally manage and remotely troubleshoot rigs—letting rig crews order supplies online and even FaceTime with family—delivering measurable cost savings and operational improvements.
