How to implement free guest Wi-Fi in one of the highest ski resorts in Europe

Zermatt Bergbahnen AG, the largest cable car and lift company in Switzerland, needed a way to offer free guest Wi‑Fi across remote, high‑altitude resort and transport sites where no wireless infrastructure existed and guests faced high mobile roaming costs. They selected Cisco Meraki, deploying Wireless LAN APs (MR82 indoor, MR72 outdoor) and Mobility Device Management to give visitors and staff reliable connectivity and centralised control.

Cisco Meraki implemented a 21‑site deployment (completed in three months) using ruggedised APs, dashboard management and MDM; APs run in a star architecture, broadcast separate guest and corporate SSIDs, and support auto‑meshing, per‑client bandwidth limits and SSID scheduling. The rollout delivers reliable connectivity up to nearly 4,000 m elevation in -30°C to 35°C conditions, gives IT full Layer‑7 visibility and remote monitoring, produced strong guest satisfaction, and provides ongoing cost savings via automatic firmware updates and simplified operations.
